2021.10.22 20:26 MrJoter SocDem debate critique (good faith)
I'm not interested in hyper-litigating the EconoBoy debate, because I'm not versed on economic topics, but I do feel Vaush fell short on a couple points.
Before I get into that, I do think EconoBoy hardcore downplayed the amount of leverage developed nations have in affecting the economic outcomes of less developed nations, and the perverse incentives implied by this. Further, I feel he read with too good charity the intentions of investors and corps who pledge to "do good" with their investments. As well, I can't trust that at any point, the data EconoBoy cites was necessarily good, or that we has able to properly extrapolate his claims based off that data.
Nonetheless, no sacred cows. Let's reflect on what Vaush could have done better.
Firstly, and most importantly, I feel Vaush did not properly characterize EconoBoy's arguments at the end of the debate. Vaush said, "The convo. feels like I gave forty really good arguments for everything I believe in and he was just like, 'No, actually, the data says it's 3%.'" This is an irresponsible reduction of his argument, because the argument on EconoBoy's end is essentially that Vaush is overstating the harm caused by the West's global trading relationships, particularly in the developing world. Further, he argues Vaush mischaracterizes the motivations of liberal economic institutions, such as large firms, banks, and the governments of developed nations. At many points throughout the conversation, EconoBoy made direct and technically valid responses to specific points Vaush raised against him.
In fact, that seems (to me, at least) to be why Vaush ends the conversation essentially saying it would require him to do more research in order to respond to the points raised by EconoBoy. (The implication is that he needs to verify 1. that EconoBoy is using sound data and 2. that he's not misrepresenting what the data implies.) At that point in the conversation it seemed that Vaush had a strong intuitive understanding of how deeply integrated the U.S.'s economy was with that of the developing world (which he, of course, believes is a reasonable intuition), but he couldn't cite specific resources to demonstrate exactly how and he is smart enough to understand when to shelve the conversation when more research is required. This is in response to EconoBoy citing specific resources which he claims challenge Vaush's argument that the U.S. American (and other), liberal capitalist econom(ies) could not function were it not for their inequitable trade relationship with the developing world. (And then you can criticize EconoBoy for how he characterizes "equitable" trade relationships between developing and developed economies.)
Also, Vaush implies EconoBoy was meaning to claim that the economic impact of economic isolationism wouldn't be severe, which he doesn't ever claim. He claims that it'd be severe, but ultimately survivable, and that one could conceive of a U.S. American economy which doesn't rely on trade from the global south.
Note, by the way, that EconoBoy was mainly advocating for trade with these developing economies that is equitable based on their relative level of productivity. Yes, I agree that EconoBoy's fails to properly analyze the degree of power Western institutions have with regards to how these developing economies allocate their resources, which has a direct effect on productivity. However, in order to criticize him on this, you have to be able to articulate his arguments properly.
I also somewhat wince at Vaush's arguments against "productivity" as an identifiable metric. I agree with the argument that developed nations have the ability to negotiate most of the terms by which they engage in trade with developing countries, thus have the power to economically fuck those countries and make them reliant on trade with the West. I just don't think that invalidates productivity as a metric. I'm not saying skepticism isn't warranted towards how productivity is being defined, but I don't assume it must be being defined maliciously. You can levy a critique against exploitation of underdeveloped economies without attacking the concept of using productivity as a metric for international trade with these countries.

Is it me or does it seem like corporate doesn't pay attention to store layouts for furniture. My dept is only a large tight fit at best but it seems like they send me stuff that belong in a xl dept. Running out of room is an understatement. Asking my dm is out the door because he's one of those it's my way or the highway types. I understand getting new products but send them to what size layout that store has, furniture is enough of a headache is it is no need to add more crap to the long list!

Aren't you tired of "x10000 gems" with hidden team wallets and not so "fair launches"?
Most of the new released "meme" tokens have a life time of maximum 1 day, if you are lucky...

💰 Uptober is not just a BEP-20 Token, it is a phenomen. During last years, October is considered to be “Uptober” for most of investors, because very few lose money by investing in this month, due to all the tokens that are going only up. As everybody is talking about Uptober, we are sure that our Token will be a success and despite the fact that we have “free promo” from our name, we are working hard to be recognized everywhere, including CoinMarketCap, CoinGecko, Binance Smart Chain Scan, Influencers and Press-Media. 💰
